2019 World Conference on Science Literacy (WCSL) Successfully Closed

  The Routable Meeting adopted in principle the Charter of the World Organization for Science Literacy, which has provided a "Beijing Action Roadmap" for promoting the founding of World Organization for Science Literacy. 


The 2019 World Conference on Science Literacy (WCSL) was successfully closed in Beijing on September 17, 2019. Under the theme of "Science Literacy for Sustainable Development", and focusing on the three topics of "Science Education and Sustainable Development", "Science Literacy and Social Responsibility" and "Cooperation and Exchanges on Science Popularization along the Belt and Road", more than 600 Chinese and foreign guests from 5 international organizations and 35 national S&T organizations from 28 countries shared profound insights and engaged in in-depth discussions through the splendid and exciting keynote speeches, roundtable meetings, plenary forums and three thematic sessions, which fully displayed the glamorous integration of science and technology with humanities and the passionate and responsible attitudes of scientists, educators and science communicators.  

During the Conference, representatives of 19 important S&T organizations from 18 countries attended the roundtable meetings. Under the joint efforts of participants and upon equal consultation and thorough discussion, the Charter of the World Organization for Science Literacy was adopted in principle and it's all agreed that the World Organization for Science Literacy must be founded as soon as possible. All participants signed the "Memorandum of Understanding on the Roundtable Meeting" to provide a "Beijing Action Roadmap"for promoting the founding of the World Organization for Science Literacy. It's also resolved to set up a Preparatory Committee to kick off the follow-up work and to promote the pragmatic bilateral and multilateral cooperation on the science education for teenagers, science museum construction and operation, science communicator fostering, and science literacy evaluation and research.  

During the Conference, UNESCO and the Chinese Association of Natural Science Museums (CANSM) handed over the Master Plan on Sri Lanka's National Science Center to the Sri Lankan Government. Five bilateral agreements were signed among China Science and Technology Museum, Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, Beijing Planetarium and the science popularization facilities or relevant organizations from Nepal, Cambodia, Russia, Singapore, Egypt, etc. The Science Education Initiative for Sustainable Developmentwas jointly released by Chinese scientists and sustainable development & science education experts from UNESCO, United States, Japan, United Kingdom, Israel, the Philippines, Thailand and other countries. China Research Institute for Science Popularization also signed letters of intent with S&T organizations from Vietnam, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Ukraine regarding the prospective cooperation on joint science literacy survey, joint production and sharing of high-quality popular science resources, and expert training in China.
