Erik Jacquemyn: Different Science Communication Methods Should Be Employed for Different Target Audience

BEIJING, October 28th (Xinhuanet, Zhong Yanping) -- "Science communication seems to be an inherent awareness that I am born to have," said Erik Jacquemyn, Chair of the Science Centre World Summit, at the 2019 World Conference on Science Literacy when being interviewed by the press. "At the age of seven, I already began to explain to my sister how my little gadgets worked. When I was about 20 years old, I officially joined the great cause of science communication."

Mr. Jacquemyn said that different science communication methods should be employed for different target audience. "For example, people in their thirties might be more interested in their future lives, and we can talk to them on the topic of 'how technology changes our future lives'." He also suggested that in carrying out science communication, some experience items should be designed to enhance the interaction with the audience and to allow the audience to gain knowledge from such experience. "On the other hand, the contents of science communication should be closely bound up with people's daily lives in order to catch people's attention," he added.

He stressed that the science communication for adolescents should closely combine learning with entertainment, and some interesting experiments and games should be designed so that adolescents can analyze and think in repeated experiments, and use scientific knowledge and methods to find out solutions. "Personal participation and self-creation may provide them with deeper perceptions," he said.

"China attaches great importance to STI and science communication. The World Conference on Science Literacy has brought together a multitude of Chinese and foreign experts in the fields of science, technology and science communication, and it's very meaningful to engage them in the heated discussions on the scientific frontiers of public concern." Mr. Jacquemyn said that this was the third time he has come to China. In spite of the limited visits, he's become increasingly fond of China. He also mentioned that in the fields of science, technology and science communication, China and Belgium have already established close partnership many years ago, and he hoped that the two countries could further strengthen communication and exchanges in this regard in the years to come.
